Aerospace Technology: Vietnam - France Elevate Strategic Cooperation

Công Nghệ Vũ Trụ Và Hàng Không Việt Nam

Expanding Next-Generation Earth Observation Satellite Development

This Declaration of Intent not only builds on the success of the VNREDSat-1 project but also opens a new chapter in the development of Vietnam’s next generation of Earth observation satellites. The parties are committed to expanding comprehensive cooperation, including:

  • Advanced technological solutions: Transferring and applying the latest technologies in the satellite sector.
  • High-quality human resource training: Developing a team of Vietnamese experts capable of operating and developing complex space projects.
  • Sharing applications for sustainable development: Leveraging satellite data to effectively support disaster monitoring, climate change, territorial planning, and resource management.

VNREDSat-1: A Symbol Of Vietnam-France High-Tech Cooperation

VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite, was designed and successfully launched by Airbus in 2013 and is currently operated by VAST. This satellite has provided over 170,000 remote sensing images, making practical contributions to monitoring and responding to environmental challenges.

Building on the solid foundation of VNREDSat-1, the parties will coordinate to develop the next satellite, leveraging valuable experience and modern technology. This cooperation will also extend within the framework of prestigious multilateral programs such as the CO3D program or the Earth Observation Satellite (SCO) Project led by CNES, with the participation of leading aerospace agencies worldwide like NASA and JAXA.

Fostering High-Quality Human Resource Training

On the same day, Prof. Le Truong Giang, Vice President of VAST, met with Mr. Stéphane Vesval, Vice President of ADS and Managing Director for Satellites, to discuss the technical status of VNREDSat-1 and the implementation direction of the newly signed DoI.

In addition to satellite cooperation, the Airbus Group is also collaborating with the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) – an institution under VAST – to develop an aerospace engineering training program conforming to European standards. This clearly demonstrates the comprehensive cooperation strategy, not only in research and design but also in developing high-tech human resources for Vietnam.

This cooperation is a practical contribution to implementing the Vietnam – France Action Plan for 2024–2028, aiming to realize the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations in an era of innovation and sustainable development.
