Reason For The Hike: “Supporting The Industry”

According to Reuters, Kevin Hassett, White House economic advisor, stated at a steel industry conference in Washington: “We started at 25%, and upon further data analysis, we realized we needed to go further to support the industry. So, the 50% tariff will take effect tomorrow.” This demonstrates the US government’s determination to protect and promote its domestic steel and aluminum production.

Who’s Affected? Canada, Mexico, And The Sole Exception

This new 50% tariff will apply to most partner countries, with the exception of the UK. The United Kingdom is currently the only country to have reached a preliminary trade agreement with the US during the 90-day pause for the tariffs Trump is rolling out. For steel and aluminum from the UK, the tariff will remain at 25% until at least July 9.

According to data from the US Census Bureau, this tariff increase will significantly impact the US’s closest trading partners:

  • Steel: Canada and Mexico will be most affected, as they are the largest and third-largest steel exporters to the US, respectively. Approximately 25% of steel consumed in the US is currently imported.
  • Aluminum: Canada could bear the heaviest impact, as it is the leading exporter of this commodity to the US, with volumes double the combined total of the next 10 largest aluminum exporting nations. Currently, the US imports about half of its aluminum from abroad.

Reactions From Trading Partners

  • Canada: The office of Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada is engaged in intensive negotiations to lift this tariff and other duties.
  • Mexico: Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard called the new tariff “unfair and unsustainable,” especially since Mexico imports more steel from the US than it exports there. He emphasized: “Tariffs should not be imposed on a product where the US has a trade surplus,” adding that Mexico will seek an exemption from this tariff increase.

Impact On Metal Markets

President Donald Trump’s unexpected tariff hike has rocked metal markets this week, particularly aluminum, which has already seen its price double since the beginning of the year. This highlights the significant impact of trade policies on global prices and market stability.
