Vietnam High-Tech Agriculture: Sustainable Growth From The 2023–2025 Data Perspective

Vietnam’s agricultural sector is entering a new stage of development—where technology, data, and innovative production models have become key drivers enabling enterprises to accelerate growth.

  1. Vietnam’s agriculture – a bright spot in the economy

In 2023, the agriculture–forestry–fishery sector grew by 3.83%, making a significant contribution to national GDP. In the first six months of 2025, growth reached nearly 3.84%, reaffirming agriculture’s foundational role in economic recovery.

Beyond being a traditional “pillar,” agriculture is shifting toward sustainable growth and higher value-added exports, particularly in fruits and vegetables, fisheries, and organic agriculture.

  1. High-tech agricultural enterprises: From traditional to modern models

According to recent surveys:

  • 55% of enterprises have developed integrated models covering the entire value chain from production to distribution.
  • Approximately 32% focus on specialized segments (export, processing, logistics, etc.).
  • The remaining 14% operate in agricultural technology and solution provision.

In terms of technology adoption, most enterprises have applied:

  • Biotechnology (over 85%),
  • Digital transformation (around 80%),
  • Automation and post-harvest technologies (over 60%).

Meanwhile, precision agriculture—which requires substantial investment—has been adopted by only about half of enterprises.

Despite progress, investment in R&D remains modest: more than half of enterprises allocate less than 3% of revenue to research. This limits the pace of innovation compared to international standards.

  1. ESG and carbon credits – a new direction for sustainable agriculture

Approximately 70% of agricultural enterprises have begun implementing ESG (Environmental – Social – Governance) strategies.

Nearly two-thirds are interested in the carbon credit market, with almost 20% already piloting specific models such as low-carbon rice cultivation, circular livestock farming, or forest restoration.

This direction is seen as a way to enhance Vietnam’s export competitiveness while creating additional revenue streams from green projects.

  1. Fruits, vegetables, and exports – a fast-growing spearhead sector

In 2024, fruit and vegetable exports exceeded USD 7 billion. In just the first nine months of 2025, export value surpassed USD 6 billion, up more than 8% year-on-year. Processed fruit products, durian, bananas, and coconuts recorded strong growth by meeting international standards such as GlobalG.A.P, HACCP, and ISO 22000.

However, to sustain this momentum, enterprises must invest more deeply in preservation technology, traceability systems, and standardized production processes.

  1. Remaining challenges

Despite abundant opportunities, agricultural enterprises continue to face several barriers:

  • Policies on high-tech agriculture are still slow to be fully developed;
  • Infrastructure and investment capital remain misaligned with potential;
  • Many types of equipment and technologies are not clearly classified for preferential treatment;
  • A shortage of high-quality human resources with expertise in digital agriculture.
  1. The way forward

For high-tech agriculture to truly become a “new growth engine,” the following actions are needed:

  • The State: complete the legal framework, promote agricultural diplomacy, and create incentive mechanisms for carbon credits.
  • Enterprises: boldly invest in core technologies, data, and international partnerships.
  • Startups and investment funds: develop scalable models oriented toward regional supply chains.

The transformation of Vietnamese agricultural enterprises is a positive signal for a more sustainable development phase. When technology, policy, and human capital converge, Vietnam’s agriculture can fully emerge as a “new star” on Asia’s high-tech export map.
