As the Asia-Pacific region accelerates its energy transition, wind power is increasingly playing a vital role not only in energy security but also in achieving Net Zero goals, developing new energy industries, and attracting investment. In particular, as Vietnam’s electricity demand continues to surge in support of its double-digit economic growth targets, wind energy is expected to play a crucial role in the country’s future energy development strategy…
At the press briefing for the APAC Wind Energy Summit 2026 held on May 26, 2026, organized by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Investment – Finance Newspaper, experts and businesses emphasized that wind power is becoming a key pillar in ensuring energy security for both Vietnam and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Wind energy also plays an essential role in the roadmap toward Net Zero commitments and the green energy transition. Moreover, it opens up opportunities for developing supply chains and new energy industries across the region. At the event, organizations and enterprises discussed development trends, Vietnam’s role within the regional landscape, and cooperation opportunities in the next stage of growth.
In addition to contributing significantly to energy security, wind power creates opportunities for the development of new energy industry supply chains and the attraction of long-term investment capital. Vietnam is considered one of the most promising markets in the region, with favorable conditions to participate more deeply in the global wind power value chain.
Commenting on Vietnam’s position on the global and regional wind power map, Mr. Bui Vinh Thang, Country Director in Vietnam for the Global Wind Energy Council, stated that under the revised Power Development Plan VIII, Vietnam aims to reach approximately 26-38 GW of onshore and nearshore wind power capacity by 2030, along with 6-17 GW of offshore wind power expected to become operational during the 2030-2035 period.

According to Mr. Thang, when compared with other Asia-Pacific countries (excluding China and India), Vietnam can be considered a regional leader in both onshore and offshore wind development. He noted that Vietnam’s favorable natural conditions provide excellent potential for onshore and nearshore wind projects. In particular, Vietnam is regarded as having the best offshore wind potential in the region, estimated at around 600 GW.
Mr. Thang further emphasized that in order for Vietnam to achieve double-digit economic growth, electricity demand will increase substantially. Therefore, wind power will be one of the most important supplementary energy sources within the national energy mix.
As an EPC contractor that has installed more than 2,000 MW of wind and solar power projects in Vietnam and neighboring countries such as Laos and the Philippines, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Business Development Director of IPC E&C, shared the same positive assessment regarding Vietnam’s wind power potential.
Similarly, Mr. Ngo Tien Dat, Country Director in Vietnam for Suzlon Energy, stated that Vietnam is a highly promising country with numerous opportunities for wind power cooperation within the APAC region. Vietnam’s rapid development is driving strong electricity demand. Additionally, the country benefits from a young, dynamic, and capable workforce. This is why Suzlon selected Vietnam as the location for its first hub serving Southeast Asia and neighboring countries.
Mr. Alessandro Antonioli, Country Director in Vietnam for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, also highlighted Vietnam’s strong competitive advantages in wind energy thanks to its favorable natural resources, including high wind speeds, stable wind quality, and an extensive coastline. Another important factor is domestic demand, as the growing economy requires stable, affordable, and sustainable energy sources.
Furthermore, the shift of manufacturing supply chains from Europe and the United States to Vietnam is increasing demand for green energy. According to Mr. Antonioli, “this is both a challenge and an opportunity if supported by favorable policies, clear commercial frameworks, and stronger local supply chains.”
During the meeting, experts also discussed issues related to pricing, investment costs, development policies, and project implementation experiences from countries across the region. In particular, they explored solutions to enhance the competitiveness of domestic enterprises participating in supply chains and developing new energy industries, thereby contributing to greater energy self-sufficiency.
Mr. Nguyen Tuan, Head of Commercial Division at PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), affirmed that under current circumstances, wind power development is an irreversible trend. Especially amid global energy crises and Middle East conflicts, energy self-sufficiency has become critically important for every nation’s development.
“In the coming years, Vietnam will have to rely on renewable energy sources, particularly wind energy and especially offshore wind,” Mr. Tuan stated.
It is evident that as the Asia-Pacific region accelerates its energy transition, wind power is playing an increasingly important role not only in energy security but also in achieving Net Zero targets, developing new energy industries, and attracting long-term investment capital.
Mr. Thang stated that “as Vietnam’s electricity demand continues to rise sharply in support of its double-digit economic growth goals, wind power will play an extremely important role in the country’s future energy development strategy.”
“Through the APAC Wind Energy Summit 2026 in Hanoi, we hope to send a positive message to the international investment community that Vietnam is a highly attractive market with abundant opportunities for investment cooperation in both onshore and offshore wind energy.”
The summit is one of the most important wind energy forums in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting policymakers, financial institutions, energy corporations, and leading technology companies from around the world.
Representatives of the Global Wind Energy Council expressed expectations that the event would further strengthen connections between Vietnam and international capital flows, technologies, and supply chains, while creating practical cooperation opportunities between Vietnamese enterprises and global partners in areas such as project development, equipment manufacturing, port infrastructure, logistics, green finance, and wind power supply chains.
According to GWEC, the APAC Wind Energy Summit 2026 is not only a major international energy event but also a long-term cooperation platform that promotes the development of the wind power industry and green industries in Vietnam and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
With the theme “Wind Energy Building Prosperity Across Asia-Pacific: Powering Economies Through Scaling Wind and Supply Chains,” Mr. Le Trong Minh, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Finance – Investment Newspaper, stated that the summit is the region’s leading commercial event for the wind energy sector, providing a valuable environment for discussions on key issues shaping the future of the regional wind industry while also opening up new cooperation opportunities.
“The conference theme carries significant meaning for economies pursuing rapid and sustainable growth, including Vietnam, a country that consistently demonstrates responsibility to the international community, particularly through its commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050,” Mr. Minh emphasized.
The summit will also provide updates on the attractiveness of Vietnam’s wind power market, opportunities for cooperation and investment between domestic and international enterprises, and policy updates from the Vietnamese Government aimed at promoting the sustainable development of the new energy sector.
