Vietnam market is emerging as a crucial and attractive market for U.S. businesses. This was affirmed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who expressed a desire for Vietnam to continue creating favorable conditions, thereby expanding two-way trade turnover and increasing imports of goods from the United States.
On May 22 (local time), in Washington D.C., during his working visit to the U.S., Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, head of the Government’s negotiation delegation, held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. The objective of the meeting was to promote bilateral economic and trade cooperation and discuss the progress of negotiations for a Reciprocal Trade Agreement between the two nations.
During the meeting, both Ministers agreed that Vietnam and the U.S. possess highly complementary economies with extensive potential for cooperation. Minister Nguyen Hong Dien highlighted Vietnam’s large and stable demand for strong U.S. products, equipment, and services, particularly in high-tech and energy sectors. Vietnam also committed to fostering a transparent and healthy trade environment and is ready to enhance coordination with the U.S. in preventing trade fraud, origin fraud, and illegal transshipment.
With the goal of becoming a high-income developed nation by 2035, Vietnam identifies the U.S. as one of its foremost strategic partners. Vietnam aims to promote economic and trade relations towards a balanced, sustainable, and mutually beneficial direction.
Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien requested the U.S. to work with Vietnam to resolve existing economic and trade issues, including promptly recognizing Vietnam as a market economy and removing Vietnam from the D1 and D3 lists that restrict high-tech product exports. These steps, he emphasized, would bring practical benefits to both countries and improve the trade balance in a fair, harmonious, and sustainable manner.
For his part, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick praised Vietnam’s efforts and goodwill in negotiating the bilateral Reciprocal Trade Agreement. He welcomed the increased cooperation between the two countries in high-tech sectors and areas with high added value. He reaffirmed that Vietnam is a critical and appealing market for U.S. businesses and expressed hope that Vietnam would continue to facilitate U.S. investment projects, thereby expanding two-way trade, especially imports of goods from the U.S.
Both sides agreed to continue fostering technical dialogue and maintaining high-level exchanges to achieve substantive progress in negotiations soon, aiming to build a stable and long-term economic and trade cooperation framework.
Earlier, on May 21 (local time), during his working visit to the U.S., Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien met with Senator Ted Cruz, Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Senator Steve Daines, a member of the Senate Finance and Foreign Relations Committees.
During these meetings, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to fostering a harmonious and sustainable bilateral economic and trade relationship, bringing tangible benefits to the people and businesses of both countries. He affirmed that Vietnam consistently creates favorable conditions for U.S. businesses to invest and operate effectively and requested the U.S. to consider Vietnam a priority trade partner now that the two countries have officially upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Regarding the bilateral trade negotiation process, the Minister affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to coordinate closely with the U.S. towards a trade agreement based on the principles of respecting sovereignty, balancing interests, and aligning with international commitments and each party’s development level. He also urged the Senators to support and promote this process.
From the U.S. side, the Senators highly appreciated the development potential of the Vietnamese market, particularly in the industrial, energy, high-tech, and digital economy sectors. The Senators noted that many large U.S. businesses are closely monitoring Vietnam’s policies and investment environment, and expressed their desire to expand their business operations and make long-term investments in this strategic market within the Asia-Pacific region.
Both sides anticipate that the comprehensive cooperation relationship between Vietnam and the U.S. will continue to be strengthened and developed, especially as the global economy undergoes significant supply chain restructuring and expands into dynamic, stable markets like Vietnam.
